Background:
In order to face today’s challenges it is needed to have a holistic and integrated approach, not only to increase awareness but to spread concrete possible solutions at the same time to encourage active participation in the construction of a better society. It will be shared and learnt through the workshop a large diversity of the most effective and creative educational methodologies towards sustainability.
Many people in Europe feel disempowered due to the lack of space for participation in the decision making process which affect their daily life. This trend is particularly evident in the case of the environmental critical situation, the over consumption and the destruction of the natural resources where people often feel incapable of making a difference.
The little participation of the people and the lack of real innovative alternative solutions requires to promote new ways of empowering people to become more active in their local and personal processes to build up sustainable lifestyles as concrete alternatives for the future.
Content of the Workshop:
The workshop has a deep integrated and holistic vision, using non-formal techniques and through participatory processes which respond directly to the main global challenges towards sustainable development, active citizenship and environmental awareness. We are working within the context of the UN Decade for the Education for Sustainability, 2005-2014.
– The participants will experience by doing different participatory process techniques which will invite them to look into problems from a different perspective, finding solutions to their individual and common challenges. They will share daily tasks, have cultural exchange experiences, together with social and communication tools that focus on active participation strengthening self development as well as teamwork and group cohesion.
-Capacity building, better understanding and useful practical tools within sustainable lifestyles and innovative environmental, economical and social solutions in order to face the global challenges today.
– A living and learning experience based in non-formal education methods, participatory processes, cultural integration and mutual understanding among adults learners from different countries in Europe.
– Empowerment to become an active citizen at the local, national and European level.
– Getting to know various international networks and movements with people who share the same interest and are working towards sustainability, with the possibility to join forces and becoming a part of.
– Visit of several concrete examples regarding local democracy and sustainable solutions specifically in Sagene District but also in the City of Oslo and surroundings.
Methodology:
We will use a combination of principles and innovative concepts in non-formal education together with participatory processes techniques such as: Future workshop, open space, speed dialog, fish bowl, opera, forum, along others.
The structure of the workshop reflects the four pillars of education mentioned in ‘The treasure Within’ Report to UNESCO of the International Commission on Education for the Twenty-first Century:
• Learning to know – mastering learning tools rather than acquisition of structured knowledge.
• Learning to do – equipping people for the types of work needed now and in the future including innovation and adaptation of learning to future work environments.
• Learning to live together, and with others – peacefully resolving conflict, discovering other people and their cultures, fostering community capability, individual competence and capacity, economic resilience, and social inclusion.
• Learning to be – education contributing to a person’s complete development: mind and body, intelligence, sensitivity, aesthetic appreciation and spirituality.
Terms and Conditions to apply for the Grant:
Concerning target group, we will focus on youths and adults participants looking for practical and meaningful ways to make a contribution to build a better world.
This workshop is not a vocational training course for staff in education or people being already skilled in the theme. We are especially inviting people who can use this living experience to achieve a better personal development and access to non-formal education.
We request that potential candidates submit the application form and a CV. Candidate selection will happen according to whom is most suitable for this learning experience, combined with factors such as the participant’s motivation, interests, social, cultural or geographical background and their intention to become more active involved in future actions from the civil society within the EU-countries.
Logistic:
The workshop will take place in the district of Sagene in Oslo-Norway. Sagene is recognized by their participatory processes, local democracy and sustainable projects. Oslo was considered the most sustainable city in 2003 and has several interesting places to see in this regard. Some of these processes will be shown along the workshop.
The places have good facilities to develop the theoretical and practical “hands on” activities, where practical work and sharing social cohesion will give a good base for understanding the complexity and integrity of these issues besides contributing to the individual development and transformation towards a more sustainable future.
For the accommodation of the participants, they will be lodged at a youth hostel or similar in central Oslo with good communication and transport facilities. The accommodation will take place in common dormitories (4-6 persons) for men and women, with good standard. Three meals per day will be also covered by the grant.
Travel expensive will be reimbursed on arrival after presentation of receipts.
Selected participants accredited by the grant will be informed during the first week of august in order to make all the practical arrangements necessary.
